Earth Science Themes

Earth science applications and research questions encompassed by ACES span a broad spectrum. The participants in ACES include; ocean and atmospheric scientists from MIT's Program in Atmospheres, Ocean and Climate, hydrologists from the MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, applied seimsic research groups from MIT's Earth Resources Laboratory , geophysicists and planetary scientists within MIT's Earth Atmospheric and Planetary Science geophysics and geology programs and climate impacts scientists in the MIT Center for Global Change Science. Some of the key science research areas that these groups are addressing computationally include:

• Planetary scale simulation.
  numerical models of ocean, atmosphere, sea-ice, land-surface, mantle and crustal dynamics.
  
  
• Constrained optimization of geophysical problems.
  solving for physical, biological, chemical and biogeochemical parameters.
  
  
• Model and data synthesis.
  combining models with in-situ and remote sensed data to monitor and understand planetary processes.
