Desktop High Performance Computing

Research is often a spontaneous activity and development of computational earth science tools is almost always a highly interactive and iterative activity. The traditional computing center model of workflow is directly at odds with these characteristics.

In ACES we are researching ways in which to make the full system compute resources seamlessly accessible from desktop computers. As part of ACES we are deploying fiber networks in and between the ACES sites. These networks not only provide high-bandwidth links between sites, they also serve to allow direct integration of desktop resources. Research activities in ACES will include deploying desktop software stacks that can take advantage of this direct access.
